Do you like to work independently? Do you want some really good practice for college? Papers are a great way to show off your research and writing skills!

 Things to Remember:

  • Papers must be between 1,500  and 2,500 words
  • Citations are required
  • Double space and use 12-point font
  • You will be asked to provide four copies of your paper and annotated bibliography prior to the competition
  • See Contest Rulebook for more information

The Uploading Process
Students will NOT send in hard-copies of their papers. Students are required to email their papers no later than Monday, April 15, to The papers should be saved and emailed as Word or PDF files. Please include your exact entry title in the subject line. These papers will be considered FINAL versions by the judge team.

The Judging Process
The judges will already have read your paper. At the event, they will meet with you for 10 minutes to discuss your work. No one will be allowed to accompany you into the interview room. Teachers, family, and others must wait outside the room until you are finished. If you would like to have a copy of your paper during your interview, you must bring your own copy. MHD staff cannot make photocopies or provide a printer to make copies of your paper the day of the event.

Getting Papers Back
Judges will not return your papers to you during the interview. They will need the papers later in the day when they meet to rank the entries. If they have written comments on the paper itself, they will hand it in with their comment sheets so it can be mailed to your teacher/sponsor after the competition.
