2010 UP History Conference in Menominee

May 24, 2010

The Historical Society of Michigan’s 61st annual Upper Peninsula History Conference will be held in Menominee June 25-27. The Menominee County Historical Society and the West Shore Fishing Museum are co-hosts.

Friday afternoon will feature two tours.  The first will visit Menominee’s historic downtown waterfront, lighthouse pier and other maritime locations.  The second tour will explore sites related to the McDonald Lyching and Curse.  Friday evening the conference will visit the West Shore Fishing Museum, about 15 miles north of Menominee on M-35.

A wide variety of keynote presentations and breakout speakers will delve into many aspects of Menominee and UP history.  They include the historic relationship between Menominee and Marinette WI, early white pine boom and its shift to diversified industry when the lumber spurt vanished, city native May Dugas who became an international celebrity on the social circuit as a baroness, logging on the Menominee River, fur trading, iron mining on the Michigan Iron Range, the Great Peshtigo fire and other fires throughout the region in 1871, the Ann Arbor railroad ferry, early Native American copper industry and more.

A pre-conference workshop for small museums and historical societies who struggle with curatorial issues related to their artifact and archival collections will be featured on Friday morning. The workshop will cover storage, preservation, cataloging and legal issues.

The annual UP History Conference is a program of the Historical Society of Michigan.  It is one of four major Michigan history conferences which also include the State History Conference, the Michigan in Perspective: the Local History Conference and Mulling Over Michigan, a conference for educators.  Additional information is available online at www.hsmichigan.org or call toll-free (800) 692-1828.
