2012 Michigan History Day State Champions Announced

Posted April 28, 2012

MOUNT PLEASANT—More than 115 Michigan elementary, middle, and high school students received top honors at the Michigan History Day State Finals on Saturday, April 28. The event was held at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant.

Winners at the state finals included students from Ada, Ann Arbor, Bay City, Chassell, Comstock Park, Dearborn Heights, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Grosse Pointe Park, Hancock, Hastings, Holland, Kalamazoo, Montague, Novi, Plymouth, Saginaw, Sault Ste. Marie, South Haven, Tahquamenon, Traverse City, and Whitehall.

This year, about 5,500 students participated in the Michigan History Day program. After competing in regional districts statewide, 329 students reached the state finals. Finalists chosen at the state competition in the junior and senior divisions now move on to the national contest, called National History Day, held this June in College Park, Maryland.

Michigan History Day offers a fascinating opportunity to move social science beyond routine learning. Students perform research on an individually chosen topic. They then present their work through the disciplines of writing, art, literature, music, drama, and/or visual communications. “We were thrilled to see the large increase in participation and excellent quality in student work,” said Emily Asbenson, MHD state coordinator.

All entries were tied in some way to the 2012 National History Day theme, “Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History.” A full list of winners is available here.

Lead sponsors of History Day include Meijer Inc., the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation, Clarke Historical Library, Central Michigan University, and Amway.

Michigan History Day is an educational program of the Historical Society of Michigan, the state’s oldest cultural organization. For more information, visit www.hsmichigan.org.
