HSM Presents Statewide Michigan Studies Conference for Educators

The Historical Society of Michigan presents Mulling Over Michigan, a statewide Michigan studies conference aimed at educators. It will take place February 9, 2012 at the Monroe ISD Professional Development Building.

The event will provide a host of useful sessions aimed at helping teachers who address Michigan history in their classrooms.  Content will include foci on 3rd-4th grade levels as well as offerings aimed at secondary teachers wanting to integrate Michigan history and themes in their history and other social studies courses.  The event begins with registration at 3:30 pm and features three sets of concurrent sessions from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm.  Exhibitors will also be on hand with a variety of resources aimed at teaching Michigan history in the classroom.  Registration is only $65 and includes refreshments, conference materials and a one-year membership to the Historical Society of Michigan.

  • Innovative Lesson Plans and On-line Curriculum for Michigan History GLCE
  • Using Place-Based Historical Resources
  • Building Detroit: an Interactive Web-Based Program
  • Integrating Michigan History into American and World History for Secondary Classrooms
  • The Erie Canal and Early Michigan Settlement
  • New Programming at the Michigan Historical Center
  • Troy Historic Village and Edsel & Eleanor Ford House Resources
  • Michigan in the War of 1812 and the Civil War
  • The Civil Rights Movement in Michigan
  • Michigan’s Native American History
  • Michigan History Day in 4th through 12th Grade Classrooms
  • The Underground Railroad

Also, Mulling now offers CEUs – .3 SB-CEU’s will be available for teachers needing them for re-certification. Teachers must sign in; complete an application on site; attend 3 complete sessions; and sign in and out at the beginning and end of the evening. Receipt of SB-CEU’s is contingent upon completing an on-line evaluation and paying $2.50 to the state.
