LANSING, Mich. — Calling all historians, history buffs and Michigan residents interested in the Upper Peninsula's history and culture! The Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) is hosting a one-of-a-kind conference weekend celebrating the U.P. in the historic Iron Mountain region on June 23-25, 2023.
The Upper Peninsula History Conference is one of HSM's most popular events, and features exciting keynote presentations, content sessions, educational workshops, a robust exhibit hall and more. The event includes keynotes on Lewis Cass' 1820 expedition into the U.P., famous lost whaleback ships and the fun-yet-daring historical escapades of man's four-legged friends.
In addition to the keynotes, join HSM for content sessions on the story of "Klondike Mike" Mahoney, inspiration for Jack London's Call of the Wild; the Menominee Range's red-light district; narrative histories from miners in Norway, Michigan; the story of Cora Reynolds Anderson, the first woman to sit on the Michigan House of Representatives and a member of Baraga's Native community; the Ford Motor Company in Kingsford; the U.P. fur trade; the humongous fungus of Crystal Falls and many other topics.
Pricing for the Upper Peninsula History Conference starts at $169 for those who register in advance and $179 for walk-in registrations.
