HSM Presents Mulling Over Michigan for Educators

LANSING—The Historical Society of Michigan presents Mulling Over Michigan, a statewide conference aimed at teachers, pre-service teachers, and others teaching grades 3rd-12th who are interested in integrating state and local history into their social studies courses. Hosted and sponsored by the Macomb ISD in Clinton Township, the event is scheduled for 4 to 7:30 p.m. on February 12, 2013. (Registration and exhibits open at 3 p.m. Sessions will begin at 4 p.m.)

The conference includes three sets of concurrent sessions, with separate tracks for elementary, middle, and high school teachers. The keynote presentation, Indian Education for All, will be presented by Mike Jetty, a national leader in promoting accurate teaching and learning about American Indians. His presentation will consider Montana’s Indian Education efforts, which have provided a model for teaching about American Indians for several states. Jetty will share sample resources and show how they can be used to support standards-based instruction to meet the needs of various learners in different grade levels and in multiple content areas.

    • Teaching Commemoration with the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald in United States History
    • Integrating National History Day into Your Classroom

Exhibitors will also be on hand with a variety of resources aimed at teaching state and local history in the classroom.

Registration is $65 and includes refreshments, conference materials, and a one-year membership to the Historical Society of Michigan. SCECHs will be available to teachers who wish to receive them. Mulling Over Michigan is an educational program of the Historical Society of Michigan, the oldest cultural organization in Michigan.
